Century’s sea fishing rods are some of the best distance casting rods you can buy in the UK. What’s really fantastic about this brand is that all their rods and blanks are Made in England. The benefits of this in terms of quality control and being able to fine-tune rods for British fishing conditions are huge – and it shows. What makes Century rods different from other beachcasting rods?

Century rods have overall higher build quality and attention to detail in pretty much every aspect of their design, from eyelet spacing down to the spray finish. Some brands release rods under the same name that are made in different factories and have different attributes. One of the huge challenges for tackle brands is that they have limited control over their rod blanks, because the blanks are almost invariably made in Japan etc. If you want to make a great rod, you have to buy from them, or from China, where there are issues with quality control and consistency in the product that gets delivered to the UK. Century does not have any of these issues, as they make all their rods in house in the UK.

In terms of the characteristics of their rods, they have thinner blanks than most beachcasters and also have superior compatibility with multipliers / fixed spool reels on the same rod, through clever eyelet spacing.

Century say this about their blank material: “Graphex technology is a bespoke combination of the resin matrix and Graphene to benefit the rods; durability, distance, tracking, sensitivity, dampening recovery to neutral and weight saving.”. This is a bit of a mouthful for us non-materials-engineering lot. Basically, Century have modified graphite by adding graphene, which makes the material stronger and lighter. You can make a stiffer rod that is lighter-weight and still highly sensitive. This is exactly what you want if you’re designing a rod for casting heavier leads but when keeping the rod blank thin is key.
